Movie Review – The Avengers

There’s no words to describe how good this movie is!!!!! To describe it as “Absolutely Awesome” would be an understatement. As most of you know, Avengers are a group of Superheroes introduced to us by the Marvel Comics. The movie brings to life these superheroes in the most spectacular way possible. I admit I have never read the comics. I knew about these characters but I have never seen even a page of the comics. Thank you Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Pictures for the all the movies including Avengers or I would never have known about the Avengers.

The cast is truly superb. They were good in each of their own movies i.e Iron Man, Captain America and Thor but together they make it even better. They make the perfect group and the chemistry between all the actors works well. Here’s a list of who’s who in the movie – First the people we already know : Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor , Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. Jeremy Renner joins the cast as Hawkeye and Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk. Each of the characters get equal importance in the movie so you get see all of them on their own and as a team. Tom Hiddleston is “Loki” , Thor’s adoptive brother and Villain of the year.

The movie picks up from the end of the movie “Captain America: The first avenger”.  Here’s what happens in short. There are no avengers in the starting. Tony Stark a.k.a Iron Man is busy as ever with making his own life better, Captain America is trying to deal with the new world. Hawkeye is working with Nick Fury, Black Widow is on some mission, Dr. Bruce Banner a.k.a The Hulk is working as a Doctor somewhere in India and Thor’s not on Earth so we don’t know what he’s been doing. Loki is on earth to take the Tesseract (the weird blue cube thing from the former movie that has the special powers and brings nothing good). Nick Fury (Samuel .L. Jackson) brings together all the superheores to bring down Loki.  Then there is there is the awesome action sequence of The Avengers Vs Loki’s Army. As you can guess the ending is “The goods guys win”. The movie has a fast pace but its not rushed so you wont feel like your watching on fast forward. Even though its an action movie they have managed to mix the comedy parts perfectly. Nothings out of place and none of the lines are out of order.

I might have made the movie sound a bit simple but its not. You HAVE to see this movie. I have watched other movies in 3D but this one is really well made. The effects are in the right parts and at the right time. Especially the action sequence with all the aliens and other stuff, the 3D effects in those parts were superb. And I have to say, the new guys to the team, Jeremy Renner and Mark Ruffalo, were soo good. Especially, The Hulk.

I would say this movie is a 10/10 and truly deserves it. Its a must watch movie and go for 3D.

Movie Review: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

I finally got around to watching this movie. I have to say this is one of the few book-adaptations that i have seen which actually does justice to the book. The acting is truly superb. If you have read my book review then you know that I LOVE Lisbeth’s character. When I saw the Swedish movie I thought that Noomi Rapace was awesome and no one can be a better ‘Lisbeth’. So I was  pretty curious to see Rooney Mara’s acting. I’m happy to say she was just as good.

For those of you who have no idea about the movie/novel, let me give a little outline of the story. This is crime- thriller based on the novel of the same name by Stieg Larsson, following Mikael Blomkvist’s attempt to solve the mystery surrounding  the disappearance of a girl 40 years ago.

Mikael Blomkvist, a Journalist an part-owner of Millenium magazine is facing a libel case for mentioning the shady side of a businessman named Hans-Erik Wennerstrom. He looses the case and his savings. Henrik Vanger approaches him with a proposition. Solve the mystery about the disappearance of his niece and in return he would provide proof about Wennerstrom’s shady character to help Blomkvist. The Vanger family are millionaires once owning various businesses but the family as a whole can be described shortly as a dysfunctional and no ones seems to talk to one another. When Blomkvist asks for an assistant he is informed of a brilliant researcher, Lisbeth Salander, who actually did the background check on him for the Vanger family. Together they uncover a series of murders that might be the work of a serial killer and  disturbing secrets about some of the Vanger family members. The movie also follows Lisbeth’s life as a form of sub-plot.  When you read the book you get a definite mental picture of Lisbeth and I liked the fact that the movie portrayal of her character is the same as i pictured when reading. The ending of the movie is different from that of the book but it doesn’t spoil the movie in any way.

I don’t think i need to explain the movie in detail because between the book and movie and everything else surrounding this story almost everyone knows what its about. The cast was really good. Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara did an excellent job of bringing the characters to life.Cant wait to watch the next part. If you haven’t seen it yet it is a movie worth watching.

Comedies That I Can Watch Again & Again

Theres nothing like a good comedy movie to get you relaxed. Hmmm.. May be there are a few other things as well..a good book, Ice-cream, chocolate cake, a nice day at the beach…. Anyway.. Back to comedy movies..

I like watching them because it shows that there are worse goofballs out there than us. I’m not taking any names, you can figure out if the”us” applies to you. I believe there’s nothing wrong with being a bit silly sometimes. Without us the world would be one big, boring place.

I’m sure that all of you can name atleast one comedy movie that can make you laugh even if you have seen it twice, trice or more times before; or atleast watch again when you are too lazy to find a DVD or download something. The list of movies that I’ve watched a lot but havent got bored of are here. Let me know if any of them are on your list.

Good comedies leave you laughing like this!

  • Jerry Maguire

  • Shrek

  • Hangover – Part 1 and 2

  • Dumb and Dumber

  • Knocked Up

  • Bruce Almighty

  • Shaun Of The Dead

  • Father Of The Bride

  • My Big Fat Greek Wedding

  • There’s Something About Mary
  • The Simpson’s Movie

  • American Pie

  • Zombieland

I’m sure there are more movies that belong in the list. But silly me can’t remember them right now..

Let me know the names of the movies that you would like to add to the list.

Movie Week

This week has turned into movie week for me. Saw two new movies at the cinemas, saw some movies on TV that I haven’t seen before and planning to watch some more before this week ends. Thought I would share my view on the new movies that I saw.

The Three Musketeers

An Action/Adventure movie. This movie is for those who like action movies because there are a lot of nicely choreographed fight scenes in it. Even though it is also classified under romance there is nothing in the movie to fit that genre. Everyone must already know the plot, considering there are more than 10 versions of the movie to date and a novel. Here is the outline of the plot; The musketeers have been disbanded – D’Artagnan, hot-headed aspiring musketeer, joins the three heroes Arthos, Porthos and Aramis – They have to deal with a double agent, Milady (Milla Jovovich) and save France from coming under the control of The Cardinal who wants to start a war with England. The movie is quite good but I found it a bit too fast. They tried to fit the whole story in two hours so it’s a little rushed. Even with the above flaw the movie is enjoyable and the acting really good.

My rating : 6/10

Real Steel

A really awesome movie!! I didn’t have much hopes for this movie earlier and thought it was just another sci-fi flick. I only went for this because there weren’t any other good movies playing in the cinemas here and at least there is Hugh Jackman 🙂 . Well, Surprise! Surprise!! The movie turned out to be awesome( I’ll have to repeat this word a lot for describing this movie ).The story is told in a very good way, there is humor and most of all there is absolutely awesome action scenes.

Here is short summary from IMBD “Set in the near future, where robot boxing is a top sport, a struggling promoter feels he’s found a champion in a discarded robot. During his hopeful rise to the top, he discovers he has an 11-year-old son who wants to know his father.”

It doesn’t come anywhere near Transformers but it has become my second favorite movie featuring robots. I loved the robot boxing part. I will recommend this movie as “Must Watch” if you are the action movie type. The soundtrack is really nice. Here is the link for the songlist :  http://www.tunefind.com/movie/real-steel

My rating 8/10

The Magical World Of Harry Potter

This post is dedicated to my best friend, a die-hard fan of Harry Potter and also to all the other fans of the series. This post is not a review of the books or the movies but just my opinion. I don’t think this book or the author needs any sort of introduction but for those who are new to it I will quote from Wikipedia,Harry Potter, written by the British author J. K Rowling, is a series of seven fantasy novels which chronicle the adventures of the adolescent wizard Harry Potter and his best friends, all of whom are students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and their quest to overcome the evil dark wizard Lord Voldemort”.  Those who have read the books and/or seen the movies know that the above lines don’t even start to describe the magic that the book has unleashed on the world.

The series have enough power to captivate its audience no matter what their age or which country they are from or what language they speak. The book widened the meaning of the term “magic” in our minds from simple tricks to something powerful. I first read the book when I was 13 and fell completely in love with it. Over time other authors have replaced the top spot but this series is sure to remain etched forever in my mind. The story, the setting, the characters works its own magic by leaving an impact on its readers making sure that they only want more of it.

I loved the books more than the movies since there is more detail in the plot setting and characters but the biggest reason is that it lasts longer than the three hours of movie. It doesn’t mean the movies are not good. I loved the cast and they really do bring the story to life. My favorite book was Deathly Hallows; I like battle, adventure and such themes and this book had it. In movies the first place is a tie between Deathly Hallows Part 1 and Goblet of Fire. I keep changing my mind on which character is my favorite but if I had to choose one it would be Ron Weasley. There is lot more stuff on the net than in the books; most of them are not even mentioned in the books. Did u know that you can find the whole Black family tree on net? I was surprised to find it while going through character reviews. Guess the net has a lot to offer to the fans that are not yet ready to say good-bye to the wizarding world.Whether you are a fan of the books or the movies, they are sure to take you on a ride through a world of mystery, adventure and, of course, magic.

Hope you like this post and I would love to know your views on the series.

For The Fans Of The Supernatural

This post is for all those who love the theme ‘supernatural’ whether in books, movies or anything else. Who doesn’t enjoy a good spine-chilling horror movie once in a while? It gives a good break to the usual themes of romance, tragedies, etc. I use “supernatural” as a blanket term to include ghosts, zombies, demons, vampires and all other creatures and forms man’s imagination has given birth to. I like making lists so here is a small list of books, movies, TV shows which follow this theme and are better than the rest.

Movies:

This is my favorite genre in movies, so I have watched a good number of them. These are the ones I liked watching(meaning – I can watch it any number of times without loosing interest).

  • The Exorcist- I watched this first when I was 12 and it scared the hell out of me and I still find it creepy.
  • The Omen- Here I refer to the original movie.
  • The Descent
  • 28 Days later
  • Twilight saga – It’s not a horror movie but the theme is supernatural and I make you of this excuse to include it in my list since I’m a fan.
  • Ring
  • Shutter
  • Grudge
  • Nightmare on Elm Street– Its more of slasher film but it did release Freddie Kruger in our minds.
  • Poltergeist
  • Paranormal Activity –Its good movie considering the low-budget and few effects.
  • 30 Days of night.

There might be a few more but I can’t remember their names right now.

TV shows:

There are very few TV shows of this theme available in my country so I’ll name those which I have seen at least a few episodes.

  • The Walking Dead – I watched the whole season and I loved it.
  • Teen Wolf
  • Supernatural – I have watched 5 seasons and it is a pretty good show. I  love the actors so I watch it whenever possible.
  • The Vampire Diaries
  • True Blood

Books:
I have read only a few number of books related to this theme so this list is very small.

  • Twilight saga -( I use the same reason I  mentioned before)
  • Sleepy Hollow
  • Bram Stocker’s Dracula
  • Goosebumps, Fear street by R.L.Stine – I used to love reading this series as a kid.
  • Books by Stephen King – I have just started reading so I will comment about it later.

I have heard about the following authors but haven’t read their books till now – Graham Masterton, Richard Laymond and James Herbert.

This is not an exhaustive list as it is written from what I have seen, read and heard. There may be tons of other items better than those named here, so if you know about any please leave a comment to let me and others know 🙂 .

To all the fans I also include the best song capturing the essence of horror. Hope you enjoy.

Finally! I ‘met’ Ferris Bueller.

Everyone has heard of the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and today I finally got a chance to see it! I know it came out in late 1980’s but for some reason I have never seen this movie before.I have heard a lot about this movie in so many different places, seen scenes of it on t.v and have been meaning to watch it from a really long time. The idea of watching it was probably lying in some far, distant corner of my brain. I wonder why it never came forward when I was trying to remember some movie I would like to watch? May be it got locked up in some long-forgotten filing cabinet in my brain, named “Things to do”, with a hundred other things I haven’t gotten around to doing! Before I get lost in the contents of that cabinet, let me tell what I thought about the movie.

The movie is awesome. There are, probably, a million other movies of same genre but this one is truly a classic! For those who havent seen it yet(I wonder if there is anyone), the movie is about a high school kid who decided to skip school by fooling his parents into thinking he is sick, taking his friends for a fun day in the city while his crazy school principal tries to bust him in the act.I wish I had a friend like that to help me skip school and roam around the city because I have to admit I never had the nerve to carry out such a plan. But I have skipped school pretending to be sick a couple of times but that was nothing compared to this.A teen who knows how to get everything he wants, two friends to help with his plans, a crazy school Principal, a whole city as his playground and a musical number for no apparent reason, do u need anything else to make a movie so good? I absolutely loved Cameron, can’t help feeling sorry for the poor guy who needs to feel sick to function properly. I’m so glad I finally got to watch it.
